Tub-to-shower conversions
for Grants Pass homes.

Turn a tub nobody uses into a walk-in shower. Most tub-to-shower conversions are finished in a single day. A full remodel takes longer, and you’ll know the schedule before work starts.

01 / The job

What a conversion
involves.

A tub-to-shower conversion replaces the tub with a shower that is easier to step into and easier to keep clean. It is the bathroom job Richard does most, and most of the photos on this site show this work.

The steps run in a set order. The old tub comes out, the plumbing is checked and adjusted for the new drain and valve, and the base and walls are waterproofed. Then the new base and wall surround go in, followed by the door or curtain rod, the fixtures and the final seal. Because the work stays inside the space the tub already occupied, the rest of the bathroom is left as it is.

One rule of thumb: keep a tub somewhere in the house. If this is the only tub you have, we will talk through how the bathroom gets used before you decide.

02 / Timing

Why it is usually
one day.

Most tub-to-shower conversions are finished in a single day, because the work stays inside the space the tub already occupied and the rest of the bathroom is left as it is. A full remodel takes longer: layout changes, new flooring and cabinetry all add steps. What turns up behind the old tub can add time too, and when it does you will hear about it as we go. Your estimate includes a schedule, so you know how long the bathroom will be out of service before work begins.

03 / Cost

What moves
the cost.

  • Wall surroundSolid panels, tile and other materials span a wide range of cost and upkeep. The written estimate pins down yours.
  • Glass or curtainA curtain rod is the simplest finish. A sliding glass door adds material and installation.
  • Curb or curblessA standard base has a low curb. A lower or curbless entry changes the floor and drain work, so it moves the estimate.
  • Grab bars and a seatBoth need solid backing in the wall, so they are planned at the start rather than added later. Each shows up as its own line in the estimate.
  • What is behind the old tubWater damage, soft framing or worn plumbing changes the scope. It cannot be seen from the room, so the estimate explains what is likely in a house your age.

Common questions

Before we
get started.

How long does a tub-to-shower conversion take?+

Most are finished in a single day. A conversion stays inside the space the tub already occupies, while a full remodel takes longer. Damage found behind the old tub can add time, and you'll hear about it as soon as it turns up. Your estimate includes a schedule, so you know the plan before work starts.

Will I regret removing the only tub?+

It depends on who uses the bathroom. If you bathe children or pets, or simply like a soak, keep a tub somewhere in the house. If the tub mostly collects towels, a shower is the better use of the space. Tell us how the bathroom gets used at the estimate and we'll talk it through before you decide.

Can the shower be curbless or low-threshold?+

Sometimes, depending on the floor and drain under the old tub. A standard base has a low curb. A lower or curbless entry needs more floor and drain work, and we'll check at the estimate whether your bathroom can take it. You'll have the answer in writing before work starts.

Tile or a solid surround?+

Both work. A solid or paneled surround has fewer seams, goes up quickly and is easy to keep clean. Tile gives you more design choices but adds steps, so it takes more time and costs more. The right one depends on the look you want and the schedule you have, and the estimate can price both.

Can grab bars and a seat be added?+

Yes. Bars and a built-in or fold-down seat can be part of the conversion. They need solid backing in the wall, so their positions are planned before the new walls go in. Mention them at the estimate and they'll be listed in your written scope.

What if there's damage behind the old tub?+

We'll show you what we find, explain the options, and agree on the repair before continuing. Water damage, soft framing and worn plumbing are common in older Grants Pass houses and can't be seen until the tub is out. Your estimate covers what's likely for the age of your house, so a surprise gets handled instead of derailing the job.
